Pulitzer Prize-winning authorand National
Geographic explorer-in-residenceJared
Diamond is famous for tackling questions of
broad historical sweep that also speak directly
to contemporary concerns. His best-selling books,
Guns, Germs, and Steel and Collapse, dealt with
the origins of human inequality and the reasons
some societies fail. In this talk, the distinguished
scientist and geographer takes on the subject of
why individuals, and entire societies, do or don’t
reappraise their values as conditions change.
Discover why individuals struggle to find new
values during times of personal crisis, or during
times of slow personal change. Then learn why
this issue takes on increased urgency in the
United States as the country struggles with core
values such as consumerism, individualism, and
isolationism in an increasingly globalized world.
