All That Remains This couple is retired. Their state pension is so little compared with Russia’s inflation. Both of them work along the Volga River every day, near where it meets the Caspian Sea. He fishes and she gathers wood. This was the only way that remained for them. Watching them, I understood why the Russians call the river “Mother Volga.” Fishing here is illegal, since the fish stocks have fallen.
